Declutter Your Space: 5 Easy Steps
Disorganization always tends to make a space appear cozier, cramped, and less welcoming. It is also difficult to locate items when you need them when the environment is cluttered or unarranged. Thankfully, decluttering and organizing your home does not have to be a complicated process. There are some tips and tricks on how to make a room look cleaner even without doing a lot of cleaning.
Here are 5 easy ways to declutter your home: Here are 5 easy ways to declutter your home:
1. Start Small
If there’s one thing that most people dream of, it has to be the ability to declutter their entire house in one mammoth session. But this big goal will most assuredly leave you exhausted quickly. Finally, do not attempt to change everything all at once, instead, begin with something small. Pick one area, cabinet or drawer for the purpose of the reorganization.
Try setting the alarm for 15-30 minutes of your time and focus on that one space only. Organise the items according to which pile they should be put in: ‘keep’, ‘donate/sell’ and ‘trash’. This way you have a more contained area to declutter in a specified time frame so you don’t get too overwhelmed.
When your timer rings, stop the session. Do this gradually from room to room, gradually until your home is once more free from clutter.
2. How to Get Store Items as Close to the Places You Use Them as Possible
A typical cause of disorderly entryways, desks, kitchen counters and other places is that we place objects where they are not needed. This implies that anytime you require that particular item, you have to cross the house to get it, and then you never remember to return the item to its proper place at a later time.
Another important tip that one needs to consider is being purposeful about where he or she stores everyday items. Keep utensils and other kitchen appliances that are used often on the counter top or easy reach shelves. Keep a basket by the front door: throw your keys, sun glasses and all other items you pick before leaving the house into the basket.
Maintaining items within plain sight helps declutter because you will always remember their location once used.
3. Go Paperless When Possible
Paperwork is one of the most common causes of clutter in any given household. From mail, including school flyers, to random notes, to receipts, paper seizes any free space available.
Attempt to avoid using paper in tasks wherever possible. Opt for electronic statements and bills instead of getting them in writing. Instead of traditional paper calendars and to-do lists, use the phone calendar and notes app. It is preferred to keep photocopies or other physical copies of documents in the cloud instead of a physical folder.
Reducing the amount of paper that comes in means we do not have to spend so much time sifting through it, or trying to find where to put it. Extra benefit – say goodbye to papers, and it is good for the environment too!
4. Designate a Landing Spot
Are you always losing items that you use every day, such as a wallet, a phone, or keys? This issue can be solved by having homes or “landing spots” for these items to be put in.
Select a small table, tray, or basket in a convenient location close to the front door. When you come to the house, put your wallet, keys, sunglasses and anything that you have with you there. Always ensure that you are part of the process of placing items where they belong on the landing zones.
That way you will always know exactly where to get what you want when going out, thus eliminating last minute running around in search of this or that item.
5. Purge Often
This is particularly so given that clutter can build up slowly without one even noticing. Stacks of paper accumulate, sinks with dirty dishes, heaps of clothes – and suddenly there are messes.
Make it routine to perform 10 minutes daily or weekly clear out as a way of maintaining order in the room. The timer should be set, and the zooming around should be done cleaning before messes pile up. Sweep the floor, clear all the utensils, return all personal items to their proper place, collect all garbage/recycling and dispose them properly.
Routine and short cleaning sessions prevent accumulation of clutter and keep the areas free from clutter. Conserving order is far less difficult than allowing chaos to accumulate then having to clean up large messes.
Declutter for Calm
But let me tell you, it is so worth it And the best part is, the organized space does not require much work to maintain. Even if you cannot manage to adopt all of these habits, it is possible to choose a few of them that will help make your home environment cleaner and less cluttered. The fewer things you have around you, the less stress you will feel and the more you will be able to concentrate on the important elements in your life. A clean home leads to a clean mind so you can achieve every day.
